My name is Audrey Jean Wells and I have a passion for all things flute. My special interest is teaching flute and theory students of all ages and abilities. I studied flute at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and the Faculty of Music at Western University in London, ON. I have also attended master classes with such artists as Sir James Galway, Jeanne Baxtresser, Emmanuel Pahud, Robert Langevin, Donald Peck and the late Geoffrey Gilbert, to name a few. I have a strong belief in professional development and regularly attend teacher workshops, conventions and symposiums.
I am very involved in flute and pedagogical endeavours. I am an active member of the following organizations:
- The Ontario Registered Music Teachers' Association (ORMTA),
- The Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Associations,
- The Canadian Flute Association,
- The National Flute Association (USA),
- The Alliance for Canadian New Music Projects,
- The Ottawa Flute Association.
I was the former Editor of "Notes" magazine, the ORMTA's provincial journal, and served on the ORMTA's Provincial Council and Board of Examiners. I am also the Timmins Centre Representative for Royal Conservatory of Music examinations.
I have been teaching and performing in the Timmins area since 1982. I have been fortunate to see some of my students win top awards and scholarships in music festivals, competitions and examinations at the local and provincial levels. I have been honoured to have two of my students win the Silver Medal of the Royal Conservatory of Music for achieving the highest mark in woodwind examinations in the Province of Ontario. Some of my students have gone on to obtain professional university degrees in music.
I also give free workshops to flute students in area schools that focus on the basics of flute playing. If you are interested in having me come to your school, please contact me. I am also the founder and music director of the North Winds Flute Ensemble, and I teach music rudiments to students of all musical disciplines.
